It's been a while! I am new to this blogging business, and we have been crazy busy over here in MS. The Grade 7's are wrapping up their What is Art? unit I wrote about in the last post. Our first studio component illustrated the concept that "Art follows tradition." We created studies in photorealism that were very labor-intensive. I like to include a technique/skills-based component, and this wasn't particularly time-consuming since we focused on simply the objects and left out a background entirely. Then we started our second studio component, Guerrilla Art. We started by going on a field trip to Sheung Wan, to explore some local street art and even make a little bit of guerrilla art of our own. We got to visit Bibo Restaurant, which boasts an incredible collection of works from street artists like Shepard Fairey, Banksy, Space Invader, and more. Students then developed ideas for their own guerrilla art projects. We decided that guerrilla art could be any piece of public art that changed either the environment or the viewer's mindset. The guerrilla art project been a learning experience for both myself and the students. It's their first time doing (almost) an entirely choice-driven project. It's their first time creating a piece of public art, and dealing with the occasional incidences of vandalism. It's been their first time asking for and receiving feedback from students outside of their immediate art class and focusing on the documentation and presentation aspects of artmaking more so than the final product. There have been a lot of ups and downs, for sure. But it makes me really excited and feel more prepared to open up my curriculum to more choice-based projects in the future.
I will make another post in the future sharing some of our guerrilla art projects; some fun ones include a "Homework Excuse" Magic-8 ball, a Surrealist playhouse made out of cardboard, a galaxy-themed photobooth, crowd-sourced short stories, handmade zines and good fortunes for distribution, and several campus-beautifying installations. Have you seen any of our guerrilla art installations around campus? Did they change the way YOU think about art?
